Fragments of the “Gypsy” mosaic, which were previously exhibited at the University of Ohling Bowling Green, USA, were returned to Turkey.
As the result of the 5-month talks between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey and the University of Bowling Green, an agreement was signed, under which 12 pieces of the mosaic of the ancient city of Zeugma were solemnly handed over to the representative of Turkey who delivered the artifact containers on Turkish Airlines to Istanbul. From the Istanbul airport, they were transported to Gaziantep.
The Gypsy mosaic fragments found during the illegal excavations of the ancient city of Zeugma, located on the banks of the Euphrates River, were exported from Turkey in the 1960s. In 1965, they were bought for $ 35,000 by the Ohio University of Bowling Green from art dealer Peter Marx. Since then, they have been exhibited at the University of Wolfe Arts Center under glass coating.
